The Story

The Distillery in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca

La Niña del Mezcal ESPADÍN is the result of the fusion of 3 generations of experience in the art of distilling mezcal and an extensive search through Oaxaca in search of the Gran Mezcal. Like an act of serendipity, La Niña del Mezcal was born after a magical encounter in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, also known as the “World Capital ofMezcal” when Cecilia Rios Murrieta and Armando Hernández Lorenzo met to create one of the best mezcals in the region.

Armando Hernández Lorenzo

Armando is a third generation Master Distiller. Born in Santiago Matatlán and heir to a great tradition, Armando moved to the United States at the age of 16. In California, he had the chance to work behind the bars of some of LA’s best restaurants, but always yearning to return to his homeland to carry on with his father’s legacy of making mezcal. When he felt ready, he returned to Oaxaca where he began to build his own palenque.

When Cecilia and Armando met, both having spent an important part of their lives in California, they realized that they had so much more in common than just a passion for mezcal. Both shared a vision and together they knew they could reach their dream of creating something unique while putting Mezcal back on the map in Mexico and the rest of the world.
